Since medieval times, people in Cragg Vale have had no need to travel to spa towns such as Buxton, Harrogate or Bath to “take the waters” because we have our very own ‘spa’ here in our beautiful valley. The Cragg Vale Spaw (northern dialect) is reputed to be at least 300 years old and it was the custom for people to gather there in early spring. Whether or not the(sulphurous!) water had a medicinal effect is debatable but there are anecdotes from local octogenarians of its curative and restorative properties. In 1906, a report of a pilgrimage to the Cragg Spa and then to Blackstone Edge, noted numbers were becoming fewer and only 500people went on to the White House where the Hebden Bridge Band was playing! On 1st May 2010 Cragg Vale Community Association restarted ‘Spaw Sunday’ as an annual event with music, dancing, a blessing of the water and a community picnic. We are not likely to see 500 people at our celebrations on Sunday 8th May 2022 - the Community Association would have difficulty feeding them all! However, everyone, of any age, is invited to come and join in – and you don’t actually have to ‘take the waters’! Meet at St. John’s Church at 2.30pm pm for music and dancing from Ryburn Longswords and join the procession from St John’s Church across the field, past Papermill Cottage, the Robin Hood, and on to the spa. If anyone wants a shorter walk, simply wait at the Robin Hood Inn until the procession comes past and join us for a short walk down the tarmac path to Spa Laithe Farm and the spa. The blessing will take place at around 3pm, followed by the picnic, weather permitting, and then we return to the Robin Hood for more music and dancing. |

After a long campaign by a local resident, Yorkshire Water will be doing some remedial work on Rudd Lane, mainly on the areas adjacent YW’s land. YW said:
“YW will be undertaking works to divert land water away from Rudd Lane. This will include, cleaning out a drainage ditch at the westerly end at the top of Rudd Ln adjacent to Withens Ln; cleaning away soil from the end of the cross drains where they discharge onto the land to the south side of Rudd Ln and renewing a land drain to catch the land water where it runs through a section of wall on the northern side of Rudd Ln. The final piece of work will be to rectify a poorly repaired culvert and reinstate the area around this.
In addition to the drainage work, the section of lane which is YW responsibility to maintain will have the surface repaired where damage has occurred. This area extends from the car park 379 yards east down Rudd Ln.
Once we can see how effective the work has been at diverting land water away from the Lane we can determine if any further works are required.”
Discussions are ongoing about road repairs further down the lane. A map showing the details of where the repairs will be is available to see on the CVCA website at www.craggvalecommunity.co.uk

The Community Association is supporting the creation of a new security network open and free to all Cragg Vale residents who opt to join. We are calling it CraggAlert, and its purpose is to enable everyone living in Cragg Vale to share information about security issues- (break-ins, attempted break-ins, car thefts, thefts from cars, vandalism, suspicious activity by individuals or people in vehicles, scams of all descriptions whether on the doorstep, through the post or online- the list is not exhaustive.)
Two immediate reassurances:-
First, Cragg Vale is not the crime capital of the North. But things do go wrong and one person’s experience shared can help prevent repetition in your locality.
Second, we are not taking over the role of any existing organisation. Most importantly you should continue to report all crime, actual or anticipated, to the police on 999 for crimes or emergencies in progress, and 101 for less urgent concerns.
Links will also be established with similar neighbouring groups e.g. in Mytholmroyd.
If you want to join, in the first instance please email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your name and a mobile telephone number where you may be contacted. The scheme will function via a WhatsApp closed group, administered by one of our members, so that information will not be in the public arena accessible to anyone who might put it to improper use.
And to finish-please bear with us for the first few weeks. We haven’t done this before so there may be a few glitches!
