Cragg Vale - Then and Now
- Snowfall in Cragg Vale transports the area back in time as many scenes appear unchanged, despite the passing of the years
- Walking was once the primary method of travelling around the area. Many of the ancient pathways have been rejuvenated as people explore the valley, now walking more for pleasure, rather than necessity
- Formerly the home of world leading poultry farms, the sites now host a collection of independent businesses, many with international trading links, demonstrating the enterprise and adaptability of the local business community
- The views across Bell House Moor have remained unchanged for centuries, although the current occupiers are unlikely to achieve the same levels of notoriety as their 18th century forebearers, the Cragg Vale Coiners
- The people of Cragg Vale love a party! Opportunities to come together to celebrate special occasions have always been well attended
- Cragg Vale once boasted a number of hostelries, no doubt to satisfy the thirsty mill workers in the area, but the remaining 2 pubs have witnessed many events and changes over the years, whilst retaining their individual charm and character
- The area’s older properties are built from the local grit stone, of similar architectural designs, with stone roof tiles and mullioned windows. Many have benefited from rebuilds or refurbishments to enable them to maybe withstand
- Livestock farming has been in operation for generations, with the occasional colourful characters appearing on the scene
- The industrial revolution transformed the Cragg Vale working environment with 11 mills operating, employing around 2000 people. The mill owners became very wealthy but conditions for the mill workers, including women and children, were harsh. Today, only remnants are still standing, but provide a reminder of a significant time in the area’s history
- Running alongside the river, the main road links together all of Cragg Vale’s operations, and has borne witness to so many of the goings-on in the village over the years
- Life on the Cragg Vale hillsides can be challenging, the weather can be tough, but the sun eventually comes out and makes everything all right again
- The area has always had more than its fair share of colourful characters, so homespun entertainment featuring local talent is a natural outlet for our local performers
